My main objective when writing my thrillers is to tell a gripping story that entertains, but also to be convincing. While allowing for the requirements of a fictional story, I like to set my characters and plots in the “real world.”This means I spend a lot of time researching my books before I start plotting and writing, and that is always a very interesting part of the process.
For example, Joe Johnson invariably investigates a war crime as a key element of the plots in his books. So I need to either pinpoint a real war crime that happened and build a fictional story around that, as with The Black Sea and The Nazi’s Son, or create one that mirrors something that happened in real life, as in The Last Nazi and Bandit Country.
I always include a section at the end of my books to give readers a flavor of the sources I have drawn on when doing my research, so I thought it would be worth including those details here on my website.
